Gathered
together in September of 2012, Sex Crime is a swashbuckling synth-punk Rock N’
Roll faction causing a commotion in Portland, Oregon. This band possesses all
the greatness of it’s members former bands: the raging guitar hooks of The No
Talents, the manic energy of The Epoxies and unrefined street punk power of The
Rickets, just to name a few. They put it all in a big black fiery cauldron, add
some black magic spells to it, and pour it all over wax for you to enjoy. If you
are a fan of any of these guy’s and gal’s former bands, and I don’t know why
you wouldn’t be, you will dig Sex Crime in a major way. If you’re not, this is
a great place to start!
Interview by Jay
Castro
Please introduce yourselves and how do
you contribute to the Sex Crime pogo machine?
Ryan: guitar,
vocals
Cecilia:
keyboards, vocals, pogo
Holly: bass,
vocals, bang bang
Tim: stand up
drums, vocals
The band is based in Portland
but where are you all from originally?
Ryan: mostly Portland
Cecilia: Paris France
Holly: Miami, Florida
Tim: California
You have all been in some
great bands (The Rickets, Epoxies, No Talents) but how did you all meet and
start playing music together as Sex Crime?
Cecilia: A lot
of Sex was involved. That’s how we met. Crime came a bit later...
You released your debut 7” Night Vision, that has since sold out of
its first pressing, on your own Danger Records label. What led to the decision to self-release the record?
Cecilia: Well,
it’s not our label. It’s our friends from Paris, France. We did however release
our tour 7” ourselves because we wanted to get it out quick, on time for our
European tour last October.
You guys played your first
show in April of 2013 and already you’ve played with some great bands Cynics,
Cosmic Psychos, Oblivions. What has been the most memorable show the band has
played so far, good or bad? Where
was it and what made it so unforgettable?
Cecilia: How are we supposed to answer that? Every
show has been unforgettable!!! Europe was a total blast!!!! Especially crepes
and waffles.
There are a lot of Sex Crime souvenirs
out there as opposed to the typical band merch like buttons, T-shirts,
stickers. Sex Crime not only has all those but also key chains, viewfinders and
bottle openers I think it was. What led to the decision to make all this other
cool merchandise?
Cecilia: We love 60’s memorabilia! Well, that
... and stupid shit!
Your take on rise of the Cassette: viable
collectable format of music or silly hipster trend that will sooner or later
find its way back to the landfill where it belongs?
Cecilia: Cassettes
are awesome, way better than CDs!
I don’t like using the term “guilty
pleasure” because I don’t think anyone should be made to feel ashamed of
anything they like. However with that being said, what to you listen to that
you think a lot of fans may be surprised by?
Ryan: The Ramones
Cecilia: Lipps
Inc.
Holly: Herb Albert and The Tijuana Brass
Tim: Rush
What music have you unleashed on the
world and where can people go to hear it or buy it?
Cecilia: All is on Bandcamp.
What does the band have in store for us
in the near, or not so near, future?
Cecilia: A killer show with the Spits, an album
hopefully soon, a Californian tour with our dear friends the Suicide Notes in
the Spring, a lot of red wine, very, very near future!
